Nice Features but Be Aware... August 31, 2010 M. J. Phillips (Costa Mesa, CA) I bought this today in a brick and mortar, figuring it would be a great alternative to the Brother P-Touches. It has a cool magnetic holder that lets you stick it to the side of a filing cabinet, and it feels pretty good in the hand. It's very well made overall, a quality product. However I'm probably going to return it.
I became quickly frustrated at the lack of QWERTY layout on the keys. Sure, you can ding me because I knew about this before buying it, but I just didn't realize how much of a pain it is to reconfigure my brain everytime I want to make a label. It's doable, but it makes you think and hunt and peck and think and hunt and peck...I really don't want to learn the "DYMO" keyboard layout, especially since I won't be labelling things everyday!
Secondly, I was disappointed with the largest size of printout. It's jaggedy print on the letter-forms. If there is ONE thing this thing ought to do, it's print labels crisply, but at the largest size the letters show pixelation and crackly/blocky chunky edges. Now, I'm a graphic designer and I notice this right off; I showed my mom and she said, "Oh it looks nice!" and didn't seem to mind the jaggedy letters. Also, the largest size horizontally stretches the letters. However, on the next size down from the largest, it prints quite nicely.
So, I would love to love this little guy. He's compact, solid, well-built, and at the second to largest font size, prints great. But having to hunt and peck and having large jaggedy stretched letters for the largest size is just unacceptable. Ymmv.
Decent Buy August 21, 2010 John D. Polka (Kentucky) I rate this 4 stars and a decent buy, due to the cost being inexpensive compared to some of the more expensive label makers.... It functions well and makes nice labels... has a small variety of font styles, sizes and borders...Though I just like the regular large font... Many different label cartridges are available in a variety of colors and strengths....I actually used the label maker for labeling perennial markers in my hosta garden.... I used the clear plastic/black font cartridge which adhered to the standard copper plant markers nicely...with a nice coat of clear glaze.. the markers should hold up well outside....
The reason this product got only 4 stars is the heating ribbon/element(the part that touches the ribbon and causes the ribbon to show print)...well its weak...I ordered this label maker as a replacement. I was acting hastily and pressed the cutter button before the ribbon finished ejecting itself.. this jammed up the ribbon... upon gently removing the ribbon.. this heating print head or whatever... tore...its just a small piece of plastic/photo film looking stuff...
Due to how well the label maker works.. I decided to purchase another one =) Hope this helps... Happy Shopping!
Not great if UV light present July 30, 2010 Matthew Daniel (Seattle, WA USA) The label maker is a fine device but the labels can not withstand exposure to sunlight. They will brown and fade in less than a week. Not all label needs are confined to the insides of cabinets and file folders so I'm rating this quite low for that limitation.
Dissapointed July 27, 2010 santorini Like other reviews - I started out with great expectations and got some inital organizing done with the label maker. After not much use the the labels started coming out blank. I was using an adapter so batteries were not the issue. I thought maybe I just got a lemon, so I bought another one. No I have two doing the same thing - blank labels. Its a shame, but this product has some defect that make it not worth buying.
Not what I expected! July 10, 2010 tomkat I just purchased this label maker today. Very easy to use. Font size is very dissapointing. Even at the extra large setting, it only widens the font, doesn't do anything to the height. I CAN'T GET THE ADHESIVE BACKING OFF!!! Is there some trick to this????
