4 out of 5 stars Nice security box for the money   August 14, 2010

It is what it is. This is a great security box to secure your valuables. (Not a Safe or Fire proof box) The box is a fairly heavy guage sheet metal with good sized bolts to secure the double layer door. If you want to be secure from a robbery I recommend securing it to a wall. (at under 10 pounds it could easily be taken) The anchors provided look to be good only for a cement or cinder block wall.
The only con would be the keypad beep. You definitely know when you push the buttons. Having bought this for my daughters dorm room she did not want the beep. I ended up removing the speaker from the circuit board which required the use of a soldering iron.
In all a good value for the money.

4 out of 5 stars Loud beeping, but you CAN disable it -- here's how   August 13, 2010

Others have complained that when entering the keycode, it beeps very loudly on each press. I agree, but I figured out how to disable it entirely. If you open the safe, and pull out the battery pack (carefully, there is a wire running from it of course, though it seems pretty long), you should be able to see the circuit board behind it. (You can also unscrew the whole metal plate, but you shouldn't need to.)

Towards the upper-left there is a little black cylinder with a tiny hole in the middle--that's the speaker. In my case, I simply used pliers to break it off, and it snapped cleanly off. This will obviously void any warranty, if there is one. The safe works perfectly now, but with no beeping. The lights still work so I can tell if the correct code was entered, etc. You could also put some duct-tape over the speaker to dampen it, or stuff something tiny into the hole and tape over it.

Aside from that, it's a nice little safe for a great price. As others have mentioned, there are ways of opening it without a key or code, so don't trust it for anything really important. But it's perfect for keeping your kids/friends/visitors from getting at your stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Small Safe   August 8, 2010
Seth Johnson (Washington, DC, USA)
I needed a safe that would fit in of the shelf squares of the Ikea case. This one did the job and the price was fairly cheap. Although, I wish it was a little taller, that's not a complaint. It is very well constructed and the door feels massive and sturdy. A nice addition are the bolts to attach it to whatever surface it's on, if you can drill through it.
The one problem, as many people pointed out, are the loud beep sounds when you punch in your code. I wish there was a volume control or just blinking of the lights.

2 out of 5 stars Loose latch/knob, not very good quality   August 2, 2010

The safe came brand-new in box, but the moment I took it out, the knob was noticeably loose. I ended up having to open it up to fix the know, but it seems something was missing with the knob assembly. Also, the instruction said you have to use "B" after the secret code to unlock, but "A" will also work. The keyed lock is not very sophisticated. This safe is only good for putting away small items, but is by no mean safe.

5 out of 5 stars Ideal for what it is.   July 25, 2010

This safe is ideal for what it is. It will do a great job of keeping inquisitive minds out (e.g., children) and your semi-valuables in one place. I do believe that having the override key on the outside is the fatal flaw in this unit. I speculate that the lock could be picked by a semi-skilled person within one hour.

For those who are looking at more secure safes I would recommend making sure that, for the additional money, you also get a few of the following convenience options, which this safe does not have:

* Allows you to turn off the key pad "beep", as not to notify others you are opening your safe.
* The number display illuminates for easy access at night.
* Either mechanical keypad or store the batteries on the outside of the unit. This way the door does not have to be opened to replace batteries, eliminating the need for a key.
* Fire and water resistant
* Shelving
